The Surfing Lizard cafe is a fairly new eatery attached to the Surf Club, right next to Coogee beach. There’s plenty of parking, cycle tracks and a new pirate ship kids playground on the doorstep. Unfortunately Coogee beach isn’t a dog friendly beach, you need to go up to CY O’Connor beach for that.
The cafe is up a large set of stairs (although they have a ramp around the back) where they have a large area of outdoor seating, some with large umbrellas, and a couple of small tables inside. Its very family friendly, casual and relaxed and they have a small kids play area in one corner.
They have a good mix of breakfast and lunch items on the menu including fish and chips and eggs benedict. The have all the usual coffees and juices but annoyingly the drinks menu and the food menu are separate and you need to pick up both which I always forget. They also offer a selection of pre-made sandwiches, salads and desserts.
The cafe is counter service, so you go in and order and are given an old stuffed toy as a table numbers. Not only are they pretty grubby and weird, they also blow away in the wind and taunt your dog (Annie couldn’t understand why the stuffed elf we were given wasn’t hers to shred).
The Surfing Lizard is a nice spot near the beach and has been our go to stop off point when we’ve been heading down south in the camper but today we stopped for lunch after a beach trip.
We ordered a cheese and bacon burger ($18), Flat white ($4.10), Banana & caramel pancakes ($17) and a smoothie. The burger was very tasty but came with a lot less fries than last time and my pancakes were heavenly and not over-sweet. I was trying to be good when I ordered the ‘healthy’ mixed berry smoothie so I was quite miffed to find out it was full of ice-cream! (I fell asleep from sugar overload on the way home).
We’ve been to the Surfing Lizard a few times now and my over riding thought is how inconsistent everything is. We’ve ordered the same items several times but a totally different plate of food arrives each time. They’ve all been super yummy but you never know what to expect. The staff have been consistently friendly though.
